Hans Brandstetter studied at the Academy in Vienna under Edmund von Hellmer and Carl Kundmann. For his first works the Academy awarded him a prize.

In Graz Jakob Gschiel was hier teacher. He became a professor at the Staatsgewerbeschule in Graz and created several works for public places in that city. His bronze statue "The Forest Lily" is in the Stadtpark in Graz. He also made sculptures for cemeteries. The sculptor Willhelm Gösser was his son.
