Eduardo Rosales came from a modest background, but he managed to obtain funds to study painting in Rome and under Federico de Madrazo at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. De Madrazo also painted his portrait.

In 1868 he married Maxima Martínez de Pedrosa and his portrait of her is now in Casón del Buen Retiro in Madrid. Apart from his portraits he painted historical scenes in a realistic style. He received a golden medal for "Death of Lucrecia" (1871).

After he fell ill he moved to Murcia, where he painted landscapes in open air. He died in 1873 in Rome, aged only 37.
