Alexander von Villers was born in Moscow into a family of French immigrants. His father Frédéric de Villers (1770-1846) was a brother of the philosopher and author Charles de Villers (1765-1815). After he left the school without graduating, he was apprenticed to a printer in Dresden. After this failed, he left for an internship with a printer in Paris, but he attended lectures in natural sciences instead. There he met Franz Liszt. He accompanied Liszt on his travels for several years and functioned as a secretary to him. Afterwards he studied law, and he graduated in a short time. In 1843 he entered into the service of the Saxon state. He worked as a diplomat in Frankfurt am Main, Paris and Vienna. In 1860 he was appointed Legation Councilor. He retired in 1870 and settled in Neulengbach. He died there in 1880. After his death, his letters to his friends were edited and published by his friend Rudof Hoyos (1821-1896).
