Isidoro del Lungo was the son of the physician Angiolo del Lungo (1807-1884). According to his father's wishes he studied law in Pisa. But his main interests were literature and poetry and important for his start in this field was his relationship with his distant relative Cesare Guasti, who was the director of the State Archives of Florence. After Corrado Gargiolli attacked his early poetry, Giosuč Carducci came to his defense and the result was a friendship that lasted from 1858 until Carducci's death in 1907. He taught literature at schools in several places and contributed to magazines. He was a member of the Accademia dei Lincei and became the president of the Dante Society. In 1906 he became a senator of the kingdom of Italy and he was a supporter of Italy's entry in the First World War. During the last years of his life he wrote a comment on Dante's "Divina Commedia".
