Wanda Achsel was the daughter of the carpenter Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst Achsel. Her mother was born as Elisabeth Götsch. She studied under Laura Détschy at the Conservatory in Berlin. She debuted in 1910 at the Berlin Summer Opera as Elsa in Wagner's "Lohengrin". After engagements in Würzburg and Cologne she worked for the Staatsoper in Vienna from 1923 until 1939. In 1923 she performed the title part of Franz Schmidt's "Fredigundis" during the premiere. In 1937 she sang with Richard Tauber in the premiere of Paumgartner's "Rossini in Neapel".

She married the tenor Hans Clemens, but they divorced in 1933. After her active singing career she worked as a vocal teacher from 1951 onwards.
