Eduardo de Filippo was the son of actor and playwright Eduardo Scarpetta and theatre costume maker Luisa de Filippo. He started acting as a young child in his fatherīs "Peppiniello".

In 1932 he began a theatre group with his brother Peppino and his sister Titina and from 1933 onwards they appeared in films. In 1944 Filippo left the group and Titina called it a day in the early 1950s. By then he was successful as a film director of comedies that were mostly based on his own plays. He starred in "L'oro di Napoli" (1954) next to Sophia Loren and Sylvana Mangano. In 1981 Italy appointed him senator for life.

He was married three times. His first wife (from 1928 to 1954) was Dorothy Pennington. Actor Luca de Filippo is their son. His second wife (from 1956 to 1959) was the actress Thea Prandi (d.1961), with whom he had two children. In 1977 he married Isabella Quarantotti (1921-2005) and this marriage lasted until his death in 1984.
