Gaetano Vestris studied dance at the Royal Academy in Paris under Luis Dupré. He joined the opera of Paris where he was dancing master to Louis CVI. He didn't use a mask and used his face in mime instead. He was called 'Le dieu de la dance' and in 1765 together with J.G. Noverre he created the ballet "Medée".

He married the dancer Anna Heinel (1753-1808) from Germany and some of their children became dancers, but his most famous child was his son by his mistress Marie Allard: Auguste Vestris would become the leading dancer of his time.
