Philippe Burty was the son of the silk merchant Marin Burty from Lyon. Fron its inception in 1859 he wrote about art for the Gazette des beaux-arts. In his column he wrote about prints, etchings, curiosities, and other subjects. He wrote the catalog for the public sale of the drawings and notebooks of Eugène Delacoix in 1864. On 8 October 1864 he married Euphrosine Gilles (1839-1924) in Paris. In 1869 he published "Sonnets et eaux-fortes", a collection of work by forty-two poets and forty-two engravers. In 1878 and 1880 he published editions of Delacroix' letters. He published numerous books on art during the 1870s and 1880s.

His daughter Madeleine married the porcelain maker Charles Edward Haviland (1839-1921), and their children were the photographer Paul Haviland (1880-1950) and the painter Frank Burty Haviland (1886-1971). He died in 1890 and was he was buried at the Montmartre cemetery. In 1900 Madeleine was buried in the same grave.
