Anton Bettelheim came from a Jewish family. He was the younger brother of the pianist Caroline von Gomperz-Bettelheim. He studied law at the university in Vienna and was promoted in 1873. He completed a legal traineeship and worked in a law firm for a while. In 1876 he ended his legal career and went to Munich to study history, literature and philosophy. During his studies he visited Paris and London.

In 1881 he returned to Vienna, where he married the author Helene Gabillon. They had three children. He was engaged by the daily newspaper Freie Neue Presse. At the same time he worked for the Deutsche Zeitung as a theatre consultant. When Theodor Herzl published his idea of Zionism he reacted negatively.

From 1907 to 1910 he directed the Allgemeinen Deutschen Biografie (General German Biography). In 1911 his biography of Beaumarchais was praised by the critics. From 1923 until his death he directed the Neuen Österreichischen Biographie (New Austrian Biography).
