Étienne Dereims was noticed Ambroise Thomas during a visit to Montpellier. He offered him an entrance exam to the Paris Conservatory, but first he had to fulfill military service. After he was accepted at the Conservatory the Franco-Prussian War broke out. He joined the army again and was taken prisoner in Verdun. He finally entered the Conservatory and left it in 1873 with a first prize for comic opera.

In 1873 he debuted at the Athénée theatre. Further stations in his career were Marseille, Barcelona and Lisbon. He married the singer Jeanne Devries in 1876 and in 1877 he joined the Opéra-Comique. There he sang the title part in the premiere of Gounod's opera "Cinq-Mars" in 1877. From 1879 to 1885 he was engaged at the Paris Opera. He debuted there as Faust and in 1884 he sang in the premiere of Gounod's revised version of "Sappho". Later in his career he mostly performed abroad. He died in Paris in 1904.

5/4/1877Premiere of Gounod's opera "Cinq-Mars" at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The role of Henri Coiffier de Ruzé, Marquis of Cinq-Mars, was played by Étienne Dereims. The opera was performed a few times and was rarely seen after that. The librettto was written by Paul Poirson and Louis Gallet and it was a loose adaption of Alfred de Vigny's historical novel of the same name. [Gounod, Charles][Vigny, Alfred Victor, Comte de]
2/4/1884Premiere of the revised version of Gounod's "Sapho" at the Opéra in Paris. Gounod had rewritten the piece and increased the number of acts from three to four. He conducted the performance himself. Gabrielle Krauss sang the role of Sapho. Étienne Dereims was Phaon, Alphonsine Richard (Renée Richard) was Glycère. [Gounod, Charles]
