Susi Peter was born Susanne Newerkla. She grew up in Persia where her father was the director of a bank. When she was fourteen years old, she went to the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna to take acting lessons. In 1938 she debuted at the Stadttheater in Klagenfurt as Julia in "romeo and Julia". She worked in Klagenfurt until 1941. An engagement at the Stadttheater in Teplitz-Schönau followed. In 1942 she went to the Deutsches theater in Prague and after that she performed at the Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin.

After the Second World War she was a member of the ensemble of the Volkstheater in Vienna for twenty years. She married the director Wolf Neuber and they had three children. The actress Eva Gold (1920-2000) and the screenwriter Ruth Kerry (1918-1991) were her sisters.
