István Péterfi was born in 1884 as the son of the railway engineer andd manager Zsigmond Pétefi (1845-1917) and Berta Ehrlich (1864-1930). He studied Law at Budapest University. He was a member of the Galileo Circle, a free-thinking association of university students that existed between 1909 and 1919. He didn't work as a lawyer for long and became a music journalist instead.

In 1913 he married the opera singer Mária Basilides. He was appointed managing director of the Syndicate of Budapest Music Critics in 1918. In 1926 he became the music critic of Magyar Hírlap. From 1945 to 1948 he was on the editorial staff of Szabadság. From 1953 to 1962 he headed the Music Foundation of the Hungarian People's Republic. He died in Budapest in 1962.
