Emilie Butenop was the daughter of the actor Carl Heinrich Butenop (1752-1843) and his wife Johanna Auguste, born Weil (1758-1807). She may have been born in Magdeburg in 1795. Until 1813 she performed with her father's traveling company and from 1813 to 1821 she was engaged at the theatre in Breslau (now Wroclaw in Poland). There she married the actor Heinrich Anschütz on 19 May 1819. They had four children.

In 1820 she first performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna as Louise in Schiller's "Kabale und Liebe" and in other roles. In 1821 she became a member of the Burgtheater together with her husband. Initially she played lovers like Juliet in Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" and later comical older women. In 1837 she toured with her husband. In het later yes she performed less frequently buy she stayed with the Burgtheater until her death in 1866.
