August Pepöck showed musical talent from an early age. He entered the boarding school of the Sankt Florian Monastery when he was twelve years old and became a member of the choir. From 1906 to 1911 he studied at the Conservatory in Vienna where Robert Fuchs and Richard Heuberger were his teachers. During the First World War he stationed in Galicia as an officer in the army. After the war he worked as a répétiteur at the theatre in Troppau (Opava). But his ambition was to become a conductor and his first station as musical director was Iglau (Jihlava). Engagements followed in Bolzano, Reichenberg (Liberec), Elberfeld and Dortmund. In his spare time he was worked as a composer. His compositions were so successful that he settled as a freelance composer in his native Gmunden in 1926. In 1930 his first operetta "Mädel ade" was performed in Leipzig. From then on he concentrated on operetta. Further successes were "Hofball in Schönbrunn" (1937) and "Der Reiter der Kaiserin" (1941). His later work attracted less attention. His last operetta was "Hochzeit in Nymphenburg" (1954). He died in 1967 in Gmunden. Events |
