Anna Exl was the daughter of the shoemaker Hans Gstöttner. She was a founder of the Exl-Bühne in Innsbruck together with her sisters Anna and Pepi and Anna's husband Ferdinand Exl. She was often cast in tragic roles. In 1939 she joined the NSDAP. Shortly before her husband died in 1941 she took over the management of the Exl-Bühne together with their daughter Ilse Exl. It was dissolved in 1956. Over the years she played in several movies. In 1957 she received the Ehrenring der Stadt Innsbruck (Ring of Honour of the City of Innsbruck).
