Ferdinand Exl was educated as a bookbinder. He started his acting career at the farmers' theater in Pradl. In 1902 he fiunded the Erste Tiroler Bauernspiel-Gesellschaft in Wilten. Innsbruck. It became known as the Exl-Bühne and later in relocated to Innsbruck. His wife Anna and her sister Mimi were among the actors of the Exl-Bühne. From 1915 to 1920 he was in charge of the Stadttheater in Innsbruck. He founded the Innsbrucker Kammerspiele and was its leader from 1919 to 1922. From 1927 to 1931 he was the artistic director of the Raimundtheater in Vienna.

He joined the NSDAP in 1933 and after the 'Anschluss' of Austria to Germany he was much in demand. He died in 1942 in Innsbruck and after his death wis wife and his daughter Ilse took over the management of the Exl-Bühne. It existed until Ilse's death in 1956.
