Hans Duhan grew up in Vienna. He studied with Ferdinand Rebay, Franz Schalk and Felix Weingartner. He debuted in 1910 in Troppau, but after first appeared at the Court Opera in Vienna on 27 April 1914 he mostly performed in Vienna and Salzburg. He worked for the Court Opera that became the State Opera until 1940 as an operatic bariton but also as a director and sometimes as a coductor. In 1916 he appeared in the premiere of "Ariadne auf Naxos" by Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Between 1922 and 1937 he also appeared at the Festspiele in Salzburg. With the Vienna State Opera he visited London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome and other cities. From 1931 to 1955 he taught opera drama at the Music Academy in Vienna. He was married to Erilda Strell (1894-1962). |
