Odette Dulac came from a family of merchant-drapers in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Her father Alexandre Latrilhe was a merchant in Aire-sur-l'Adour, Landes. In 1873 she was sent to Lorientwith her brother to be educated. She learned Greek and Latin. In 1876 her father suddenly died and this led to the rujin of the family business. She returned to her mother and they settled in Bordeaux in 1879. She worked at a factory until she continued her studied at the Ursulines convent in 1880. She stayed there until 1883. Litlte is known about her between 1883 and 1891. In 1892 she started performing on stage in Antwerp. After an engagement in Saint Petersburg she appeared in Paris from 1894. In 1897 she rose to fame with the role olf Blanche-Marie in André Messager's operetta "Les P'tites Michu". She had a fine soprano voice and performed songs written by others and by herself at the theatres and cabarets of Montmartre. In 1904 she left the stage to concentrate on writing, sculpting and painring. As a feminist she campaigned for women's right to vote and other issues. She died in 1939 in Barbizon. Events |
16/11/1897 | Premiere of Messager's "Les p'tites Michu" at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris. The music was written by André Messager and the words by Albert Vanloo and Georges Duval. Messager was the conductor. The cast included Maurice Lamy, Alice Bonheur and Odette Dulac. The operetta ran for 150 performances and became an international succes. [Messager, André] |
