Erwin Kerber was the son of Hermann Kerber, who organised concerts in Salzburg. He studied law in Vienna and Innsbruck. He became involved in the founding of the Festspiele in Salzburg. In 1933 Clemens Krauss offered him a management position at the Staatsoper in Vienna and he was its director from 1936 to 1940. After Austria joined Germany in 1938 he fired 200 Jewish employees, among them the famous singer Richard Tauber. But he also helped Bruno Walter's daughter to flee from Austria and helped Josef Krips to an engagement in Belgrado. From 1942 to 1943 he was the manager of the Landestheater in Salzburg. He died in 1943 in Salzburg. |
