Ferdinand Hey'l worked as a journalist and in 1856 he was engaged as an actor at the Hoftheater in Wiesbaden. In 1873 he was appointed Kurdirektor (director of the spa) in Wiesbaden.

In 1871 he published an article in the Rheinische Kurier in which he called for a huge monument in Niederwald am Rhein in memory of the victory over France. The article was read widely and noted by emperor Wilhelm I and Bismarck. In 1877 the construction of the Niederwalddenkmal was started and it was unveiled in 1883 in the presence of the emperor.
