Franz von Mendelssohn was the son of Alexander Mendelssohn and his wife Marianne Seeligmann. Since the 1850s he was one of the directors of the bajik that was founded by his grandfather in 1795. In 1856 he married Enore Biarnez. She was the widow of his brother Adolph Mendelssohn (1826-1851). Franz von Mendelssohn was well connected in Berlin society and his love for music brought him into the circle of friends around Clara Schumann. In 1888 he was knighted by emperor Friedrich III who wanted to knight a memeber of a liberal family. But Franz was conservative and checked with Otto Bismarck that he would support his knighthood.
