Richard Hagel was musical director of the Stadttheater in Leipzig from 1900 to 1910. Between 1906 and 1909 he was also the president of the Riedelverin. From 1919 to 1925 he was conductor at the Berliner Philharmoniker (he debuted there on 1 Aug 1919). He was a teacher at the Akademie für Kirchen- und Schulmusik in Berlin.
