Else Wohlgemuth grew up in the USA. After her return to Germany she took acting lessons in Berlin. She debuted at the Royal Theatre in Berlin and after that she was engaged at the Court Theatre in Schwerin. On 30 April 1918 she married Graf von Thun-Hohenstein. From 1910 to 1938 and from 1945 to 1959 she worked for the Burgtheater in Vienna. Her first success there was as Anna in Shakespeare's "Richard III".

In 1934 she was made a honorary member of the Burgtheater and in 1935 she received the Burgtheater Ring, but in 1938 she was removed from the ensemble after the annexation of Austria by Germany. She spent the years until 1945 abroad. From 1922 to 1925 she also appeared at the Festspiele in Salzburg. Earlier in her career she mostly appeared in tragedies, but in later years she played in comedies with equal success.
