Carl von Rokitanski studied in Prague and Vienna. In 1828 he promoted with "De varioloide vaccinica". He worked all his professional life as a pathologist for the University of Vienna where he became a professor in 1844. In 1845 he became a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Science and in 1848 he was elected into the Akademie der Wissenschaften in Austria. In 1850 he became president of the Gesellschaft der Ärzte zu Wien. In 1862 he became a Hofrat (a Royal advisor) and in 1867 emperor Francis Joseph unexpectedly made him a member of the Herrenhaus of the Reichsrat. In 1870 he was elected president of the Anthropological Society. He was knighted in 1874 and retired in 1875. It was said that he performed over 30,000 autopsies during his career. His sons were opera singer Hans von Rokitansky (1835-1909) and composer Victor von Rokitansky (1836-1896). |
