Nikolaus von Nassau was a son of Duke Wilhelm von Nassau (1792-1839) and his wife Pauline von Württemberg (1810-1856). In 1845 he joined the army of Nassau and in 1849 he was promoted to first lieutenant. In 1850 he left Nassau and he took service in Austria. In 1854 he returned to Nassau and he saw action in the Austrian Army during the war in Italy in 1859. After Otto I lost his throne in Greece, Lord Palmerston saw him as a candidate to succeed Otto because of his good relations with Russia. But Napoleon III refused him because he didn't want someone who had recently fought against France. From 1859 to 1866 he was a member of the first chamber of the Nassau estates. In 1867 he entered into the service of the Prussian army. In 1868 he married Natalia Pushkina, the daughter of the poet Pushkin. During the Franco-Prussian War he saw action at Gravellote, Sedan, Le Bourget and during the Siege of Paris. He was decorated twice for his services in respectively Sedan and Paris. He lived with Natalia in a large villa in Wiesbaden from 1869 until his death in 1905.
