Thomas Nipperdey was the son of the lawyer Hans Carl Nipperdey (1895-1968). His sister was the theologist Dorothee Sölle. He studied philosophy, history and German philology in Göttingen, Cologne and Cambridge. He taught history at Göttingen before he becamne a professor in Karlsruhe in 1963 and in Berlin in 1967. From 1971 to 1992 he worked for the University of Munich. His most import work is a history of Germany from 1800 to 1918, published in three volumes between 1983 and 1992. He died in 1992 in Munich. |
