Francisque Sarcey came from a family of canuts in Lyon. He met Edmond About at the Lycée Charlemagne and they became close friends. From 1848 to 1851 he studied at the École Normale Supérieure. He worked as a schoolmaster before he became a journalist in 1858 for "Le Figaro". In 1859 he did his first work as a drama critic for "L'Opinion nationale". In 1867 he started as a drama critic for "Le Temps" and he wrote for this newspaper until his death in 1899. During the Commune he published a weekly pamhlet, "Le Drapeau tricolore". From 1871 to 1874 he also worked for "XIX siècle" from his friend Edmond About and wrote anti clerical articles for this magazine. He was an early supporter of Sarah Bernhardt and for many years he was the leading drama critic in Paris. Sarcey was a well known personality and was caricatured in newspapers. She had the Duc de Morny to thank for an engagement with the Comédie-Française as a pensionnaire at a minimum salary. The drama critic Sarcey had recommended her for the role.
