Georg Friedrich Grotefend studied at the University of Göttingen, where he befriended C.G. Heyne, T.C. Tychsen and A.H. L. Heeren. Heine supported him in his his career and in 1799 he published "De pasigraphia sive scriptura universali" and in 1803 he was appointed prorector at Frankfurt gymnasium and soon afterwards conrector. By that time he had already done important work on the interpretation of Persion inscriptions. He extended this work over the years.

Although his studies further were centered on Latin and Italian, he also focussed on the German language and in 1815 he published "Anfangsgründe der deutschen Poesie". He published books on Latin grammar for use on schools.

In 1821 he became the director of the gymnasium in Hanover and he held this position until he retired in 1849. From 1840 to 1842 he published "Zur Geographie und Geschichte von Alt-Italien" in five volumes.
