Karl Ludwig von Knebel was the son of Johann Georg Friedrich Knebel (1697-1787). His father was a privy councilor of the margrave of Ansbach. He studied law in Halle. In 1773 he visited Wieland in Weimar. There he was hired by Anna Amalia von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach as a tutor for her son Contantin. He travelled with the princes Carl August and Constantin and in 1775 he introduced them to Goethe in Frankfurt am Main. After Goethe moved to Weimar they became close friends. In 1785 he travelled with Goethe to Karlsbad and he recorded their geological observations. In 1798 he married the singer Luise von Rudorff who was employed in Weimar from 1791 and 1794 and had been the mistress of duke Carl August. He adopted her son Carl (1796-1861) who was fathered by the Duke. She was unpopular in Weimar because of her lifestyle and the couple moved to Ilmenau and in 1805 to Jena.
