Andreas Baader was a member of the leftish student movement. In 1968 he was convicted for an arson bombing of a department store in Frankfurt am Main that he committed with his girlfriend Gudrun Ensslin. With the help of the journalist Ulrike Meinhoff he escaped from police custody in May 1970.

This was the beginning of the Baader-Meinhof gang. He robbed banks and bombed buildngs until he was caught afer a shootout in Frankfurt am Main together with Jan-Carl Raspe and Holger Meins. He was imprisoned and after the longest trial in the history of Germany he was convicted on several counts including murder.

Baader died in prison on 18 October 1977 in his cell. Jan-Carl Raspe and Gudrun Ensslin died on the same day. they were buried at the Dornhalden cemetery in Stuttgart.
