Oldest son of chef executioner Charles Sanson, who executed Louis XVI. Together with his brother he assisted his father with the executions. His brother was supposed to take over for their father, but he died after a fall from a scaffold. In April 1793 Henri, who had been a soldier and a captain of the National Guard in Paris, succeeded his father. In October 1793 he executed Marie-Antoinette, who asked his pardon after she stepped on his foot on her way to the scaffold. He was married to Marie-Louise Damidot (1776-1850).
