Bertrand broke the world record for the longest flight in a Kranich IIII two-pace glider on 6 April 1954 together with Henry Couston. They were in the air for 57 hours and 10 minutes. When he went after the world record in a one seat glider, he killed himself at a mountain top at Romanin les Alpilles near St. Remy on 26 December 1954. He was probably exhausted after gliding more than forty hours.
