Elizabeth Jackson debuted as an actress under the name of Lizzie Weston at the American Theatre in New Orleans in 1849. She also played at the Chestnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia for two seasons. She married William West and their son Charles Willie Matthews (1850-1920) became a baronet in England. In 1853 Adolphus H. Davenport became her second husband and from then on she acted under the name of Lizzie Davenport. She divorced Davenport in 1856 and married the English actor Charles Mathews, who was performing in the USA. She followed him to England and helped him to get out of debt and continue his successful career. Between 1858 and 1864 they played leading parts at the Haymarket Theatre and the Bijou Theatre in London. Mathews died in 1878. Lizzie lived on until 1899 and her ashes were buried beside him at Kensal Green Cemetery. Family Husband: Mathews, Charles (1858-1878) |
