Anna Geissler performed as a child as a folk singer and zither player at theatres. From the age of twelve she frequently appeared with her sister Marie (1857-1908) who sang and played the piano. In April 1873 she was engaged at Danzer's Orpheum where she appeared with her sister and also solo. She performed in many countries, including France, Poland, Russia and Germany. "Mir ist heut' so mollig" was written for her by Gustav Schöpl. In Romania she met the folk singer Karl Katzer (1842-1922) and they married in 1884. After her marriage she mostly appeared at the Orpheum with her husband. In 1890 they retired from the stage to run Café Katzer at the Währinger Strasse 26. It became very popular with the singing and theatre scene in Vienna. Occasionally they performed at their café. Anna died in 1920 and her husband was buried beside her at the Friedhof Kalksburg in 1922. |
