Hedwig Raabe was only fourteen years old when she performed at the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg where her uncle, the comical actor Wilke, was employed. In 1864 she was engaged by the German Court Theatre in Saint Petersburg that often toured in Germany. She was admired by the young Friedrich Nietzsche who wrote her flattering a letter in 1866. As far as known he received no anwer. In 1868 she left her engagement in Russia and in 1871 she married the tenor Albert Niemann. From 1883 onwards she worked for the Deutsche Theater in Berlin.
