Dorothy Wilde, also known as Dolly Wilde, was the daughter of Oscar Wilde's brother Willie. Her mother was Sophie Lily Lees. Willy Wilde died in 1899 and she was raised by her mother and her second husband Alexander Teixeira de Mattos. Dorothy looked a lot like Oscar Wilde.

During the First World War Dorothy was an ambulance driver and she had an affaire with her collegue Marion "Joe" Carstairs who later became a speedboat racer. More lesbian affairs followed and from 1927 until her death she was one of the lovers of Natalie Barney. In 1939 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but she refused an operation and sought alternative treatments instead. When she died in 1941 it was unclear if her death was caused by the cancer or by a drug overdose.
