Founder of the Herdersche Verlagsbuchhandlung. He started the company in Meersburg in 1801. There he worked for the prince-bishop of Mainz. In 1803 Meersburg became a part of Baden and he moved to Freiburg im Breisgau in 1808. There he published religious works as well as works of history. He accompanied Metternich as press director in 1815 and was present at the Congress of Vienna. In the following years he published an encyclopedia and several maps. He died in Freiburg where Herder Verlag is still located nowadays. |
