Robert Herdmann studied divinity at the University of St. Andrews but he broke off his studies to study painting undder Robert Scott Lauder in Edinburgh in 1847. He specialised in portraits and history scenes. He was commissioned by many Scottish city councils. In 1863 he became a fellow of the Royal Scottish Academy. Herman exhibited in London, Paris and Philadephia. He was a friend of Professor John Stuart Blackie. He married Emma Abbott. Their son William Abbott Herdmann (1858-1924) was a painter as well. His work is in the collections of the Royal Scottish Academy and the National Portrait Gallery in London. Related persons painted Collins, William |
