Max Josef Wagenbauer studied under Johann Jakob Donner the Elder and under Johann Christian von Mannlich at the drawing academy in Munich. After he served in the Bavarian army as a volunteer fromn 1797 to 1801 he became an artist to the court in 1802. In 1815 he was appointed inspector of the Royal Gallery of Paintings.

He was best known for his landscape paintings but he also painted animals. Initially he mostly created watercolours, but after 1810 he concentrated on oil paintings. He died in 1829 in Munich.
