Karl Perfall was the son of the royal chamberlain Emanuel von Perfall auf Greifenberg. His mother Franziska Freiin von Rolshausen auf Türnich came from Cologne. He received a musical education and after a successful staging of his compositions in 1849 he decided to become a professional musician, although he had also passed his law examniations successfully. He became a pupil to Moritz Hauptmann in Leipzig. In 1851 he married Julie von Reichert (1824-1874), a daughter of Ingaz Ritter von Reichert. They had four children. From 1852 to 1866 he was the conductor of the singing society Liedertafel in Munich. In 1867 he became the director of the Bavarian Court Theatre and in 1872 he was appointed general director. He staged Wagner's opera's many times. Although he was no friend of Wagner, he recognised his genius and he was loyal to Ludwig II. In 1881 he organised the first Wagner fest in Munich. In 1892 he lost his position to Ernst von Possart after an intrigue related to a small budget deficit. After that he was the director of the Akademie der Tonkunst until 1906.
