Laurencin came from an old family from Chabeuil near Valence. His tombstone states that he was born on 9 Jan 1740, but other sources give 17 Jan 1733 or 17 Jan 1741.

He was a captain of cavalry in the army as well as an author. He was also one of the first balloonists of France, travelling with Montgolfier on his first flight in 1783. In 1796 he became a member of the Institut national. He corresponded wit Voltaire and Rousseau.

His grave at the Cimietière de Loyasse in Lyon has the form of a pyramid and is among the oldest graves on the cemetery.
