Esther Réthy debuted at the National Opera in Budapest in 1934 as Micaela in "Carmen". In 1937 she made her stage debut in Vienna as Margaretha in the opera by Gounod. She was immediately successful in Vienna and from 1937 to 1949 she was engaged at the Vienna State Opera. From 1946 to 1972 she sang at the Volksoper in Vienna.

She sang parts from Mozart to Wagner and appeared at the Festspiele in Salzburg for seven years. She started teaching in 1951 and worked at the Wiener Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst until 1985. Among her pupils were Birgit Sarata and Guggi Löwinger.

She was married to Anton Paulik and later to Dr. Vincent Imre. Her son Laszló Imre became a conductor. She lived at a villa in the 19th district in Vienna until she moved to a smaller place in 1998. She died in Vienna in 2004.
