Erik Frey was the son of a dentist. He studied German literature before he took acting lessons with Albert Heine. In 1927 he made his acting debut and he appeared at the Volkstheater in Vienna as well as in Berlin, Hamburg, Prague and Bremen. In 1934 he became a member of the Austrian NSDAP. In 1935 he married the actress Jane Tilden but the marriage was over by 1939. In 1940 he married another actress, Susi Witt. They had two children. In 1935 he became a member of the ensemble of the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna. He held this position until his death. In 1938 he handed Rudolf Beer, the manager of the Volkstheater, over to the nazis. Beer was abused and commited suicide soon afterwards. But Frey also helped the father of the actor Nikolaus Paryla to escape from the country. Between 1936 and 1988 he appeared in 110 movies and between 1948 and 1962 he was also active as a director for the Theater in der Josefstadt. He died in Vienna in 1998, aged 90.
