Hugo von Freytag-Loringhoven was the son of the diplomat Karl von Freytag-Loringhoven (1811-1882). In 1877 he joined the German Imperial Army. From 1887 to 1896 he taught military history in Berlin.

From 1907 until the outbreak of the First World Was he held several commands. During WW I he was an unofficial advisor to Erich von Falkenhayn. In 1918 he was promoted to General of the Infantry.

His son Leopold married the artist Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven (Elsa Plötz).
