Carl Tautenhayn was the son of the sculptor Josef Tautenhayn (1837-1911). He was educated at the commercial Academy but he attended the Conservatory at the same time. He worked as the main cashier at the Ersten Österreichischen Spar-Casse (a savings bank). He also was a member of the management of the Wiener Männergesang-Verein for twelve years that often took him abroad. Tautenhayn founded the Tautenhayn-Quartett that was popular on the radio. As a composer he created songs, piano works and orchestral pieces.
