Gustav Maran was born as Gustav Dolezlal. He was educated as a merchant and started a business career at wholesale, but after he took acting lessons he was engaged at the Residenztheater in Vienna in 1873.

He worked in many smaller theatres in Austria until he returned to Vienna. From 1894 to 1917 he worked for the Theater in der Josefstadt. In 1916 he was in the movie "Dominik, wo ist die Tänzerin" next to Gisela Webisek. The Marangasse in Vienna was named after him.
