Willi Rose was the son of the theatre manager and actor Paul Rose. His father was the manager of the Rose-Theater in Berlin-Friedrichshain. His sons Hans, Paul and Willi succeeded him, but in 1936 Willi went his own way. He made his film debut in "Allotria" (1936) became better known to the public when after he appeared in further movies. In 1943 he appeared in "Cirkus Renz". Towards the end of the war he was famous enough to be placed on Hitler's Gottbegnadeten-Liste, meaning that he wasn't sent to the font. After the war he was able to continue his career, but now he played smaller parts. In 1956 he was in "Der Hauptmann von Köpenick". He also appeared on television. Many recordings were made from the operattas in which he performed. He died in 1978 in Berlin and was buried next to his wife, the actress Ilse Vollborn, who had died in 1974.
