Karl Woermann started as a lawyer in Hamburg in 1867. He travelled to England, France and the USA. He decided to study art history and studied in Heidelberg and Munich. In 1871 he was habilitated in Heidelberg. He travelled to Italy and Greece in 1871-1872. In 1874 he was engaged as professor of history of art and literature in Düsseldorf. In 1879 he travelled through Europa again.

In 1882 he became the director of the picture gallery in Dresden for which he wrote a scientific catalogue (1897). He held this position until 1910 and worked as an art historian afterwards. He contributed to Alfred Woltmann's "Geschichte der Malerei" ("History of Painting") and after Woltmann died he completed it.
