Gustave van de Woestijne was educated at the Academy in Ghent. In 1900 he moved to Sint-Martens-Latem together with his brother, the poet Karel van de Woestijne. He became one the best known painters of the Latem School.

During the First World War he lived in Great-Britain. In 1921 he returned to Belgium, where he became a teacher at Mechelen, Antwerp and Brussels.

He was religiously inspired and his early work was close to symbolism. Later he found a more expressionist style. He painted portraits, still lifes and sometimes landscapes.
