Friedrich von Müller studied law in Erlangen. When he was 22 years old he entered into civil service in Weimar. In 1804 he was promoted to councillor of the government. After Prussia capitulated to the French near Prenzlau he was sent to negotiate with the French. He succeeded in preserving the independency of the Grand Duchy.

In 1813 he met Napoleon in Erfurt and in 1815 he was appointed State Chancellor of the Duchy. He was known as Kanzler von Müller. He was a friend of Goethe and both the Grand Duke and Grand Duches valued his services. After his death his diaries were published under the title of "Unterhaltungen mit Goethe" ("Conversations with Goethe").
